Habitat Newark Dedicates its 72nd House
On March 30th, Habitat Newark dedicated its 72nd home. This house was the third home sponsored by Habitat Newark's Women Build group. Sylvia Loperena is the new proud homeowner of this home. She and her two daughters completed more than 400 hours of sweat equity in their partnership with Habitat Newark. Sylvia now lives in her new house with her two daughters and son.

Opportunity to Become a HFHN Homeowner
Home ownership is a dream that can seem out of reach for many families in Essex County. For those who live in cramped, run down or unsafe housing, even though they work hard for a living,
Habitat for Humanity Newark is announcing a Family Selection Committee Orientations for homes to be rehabilitated in the Ironbound District of Newark. Potential applicants can attend the orientation on Saturday, March 26th at St. James Church, 142 Jefferson Street in Newark.
Applications will be randomly selected and reviewed under strict guidelines based upon a
family’s ability to afford the mortgage, need to change current living conditions and willingness
to partner with Habitat Newark.
Applicants must attend one of the mandatory Orientation Meetings and follow the guidelines as
discussed at this meeting. To apply and participate in this program, applicants must have both a clean and current credit history, and have an annual salary between $25,300 and $61,500 depending on the size of the family. Partner families must put in a minimum of 400 hours of ‘sweat equity’ before moving into their home.

With projects in the City of Newark already underway, Habitat Newark announced they are
proceeding with rehab work of a home in Newark’s Ironbound section. This will be done in conjunction with the city of Newark and the Ironbound Community Corporation using federal
Neighborhood Stabilization Project Two (NSP2) funds, part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009. This is the first of a number of foreclosure redevelopments planned by Habitat Newark.
The home to be rehabilitated is a side by side duplex. Each unit will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a family room, kitchen and full basement. The building will be completely rehabilitated inside and out, including new plumbing and electrical systems.
Additionally, the non-profit affordable housing organization today announced they have a building permit and will soon break ground on their first home in Irvington. The new house will be a single-family two-story structure. With Habitat Newark’s first home in West Orange currently under construction, the home in Irvington will be the second building the group will begin outside of the City of Newark.

been awarded a matching donation grant of up to $100,000 from Habitat’s Cars for Homes
program. This means that the cash value of vehicles donated to these affiliates between Nov. 1,
2010, and June 30, 2011, will be matched with donations from Habitat for Humanity
International.
Vehicle donations from zip codes in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic Counties, as well as
donations made by phone when the donor specifically asks for the funds to go to one of those
Habitat affiliates, will count toward the matching program. Donors should call 877-277-HFHI

Habitat Newark Celebrates Our 25th Anniversary
Habitat for Humanity Newark is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011 with an increase in its rate of homebuilding. The organization has built homes for more than 71 hard-working, low-income families since its founding in 1986. Its goal is to build eleven more in 2011.
In addition to an increase in its rate of construction, Habitat Newark is also venturing beyond the City of Newark to work in other municipalities in 2011. In November, Habitat Newark broke ground on a home in West Orange, the organization’s first home outside of Newark. Homes in Irvington and other towns in Essex County are in the planning stage.
A critical factor in the ability of Habitat Newark to achieve its goals for 2011 will be the amount of funds the group is able to raise. “We are extremely grateful to the individuals and corporations that have supported us in the past,” said David R. Zurheide, executive director of Habitat Newark. “With the drastically increased need for affordable housing for families hit hard by the recession, we are asking our supporters to dig deep to help us achieve our goals this year.”
One source of additional income will be the matching donations from Habitat for Humanity
International’s Cars for Homes program. Vehicles from Essex County zip codes donated to Cars for Homes will earn up to $25,000 matching dollars from the program for Habitat Newark from now through June. Habitat Newark has partnered with the Habitat affiliates from Paterson, Bergen County and Morris County for the grant and will be hosting a Jersey Road Trip in the spring to promote the program.

Lowe's Giftcard Match
Last Thursday, to celebrate the grand opening of Lowe's of Bayonne, Hudson County, the store held a special fundraiser for Habitat Newark. All Lowe's giftcards purchased that day, up to $5,000, were matched and dollar-for- dollar contribution was made to Habitat Newark.
The money raised will help support Habitat Newark's next home. Home Dedication
We will be dedicating our 71st house, The Generosity House, this Saturday, December 11th at 11 am. Please join us at 216 12th Avenue to help us celebrate the dedication of our most recently completed home. A reception will follow the dedication at a to be announced location.
Katina, the family partner moving into this house, met Habitat's requirement of at least 400 hours of sweat equity on her new house. Like all our other family partners, she will be paying back an interest-free mortgage for the cost of "sticks and bricks" for her house. Katina and her family are leaving substandard housing to move into their very own, new home.
Congratulations, Katina! We wish you and your family all the best in your new home!

Youth Involvement With HFHN
Many children set up lemonade stands in their neighborhoods, but few are able to impact the lives of others at such a young age. Nutley resident Jordan Woods, 11, and Rachel Friedlander, 12, of Montclair, each took it upon themselves to hold lemonade stands in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Newark.
“People who don’t have homes should be able to have them and live a normal life like everyone else,” Woods said.
Woods aspires to attend Harvard University or the University of Maryland to become a doctor. When he’s not volunteering, he also enjoys playing video games, drawing, swimming and reading.
"Everyone in the world should have a home- a place to come to at the end of the day and relax,” said Friedlander, a Montclair resident. “That's why I wanted to help people get a home."
Friedlander has been raising money from third through sixth grade and was able to raise more than $160 for Habitat Newark. She did so by selling cookies, bookmarks, and decorated plates made by her and her friends at her school. She also organized lemonade stands and did face paintings for younger children.
"When I was in third grade, I did a book report about Jimmy Carter and learned that he worked with Habitat for Humanity,” Friedlander said. “My mom volunteered with Habitat Newark and she drove me by one of the houses.”
Friedlander said there she met Executive Director David Zurheide, who taught her about building houses for families that don’t have them. “He told me that it costs about $90,000 to build a home in Newark and that became my goal,” she said. “I didn't reach that goal, but it was fun trying."
Friedlander hopes to attend college at Northwestern or Stanford University. She eventually wants to become a talk show host and help benefit more non-profit organizations. Friedlander has other big plans for the future, including her Bat Mitzvah project in which she hopes to
raise $25,000 for the Diabetes Foundation, Inc.
“This organization helps get important Diabetes medicine to people who can't afford it,” she said. “After that I would like to spend the rest of my time working to raise more money for Habitat Newark. I look forward to when I'm 16 - then I can actually help build the house."

FedEx Ground Partners with Habitat Newark
FedEx Ground recently teamed up with Habitat Newark to work on the Women Build III House.
About 18 employees volunteered to attend the FedEx Build Day. The company also donated $10,000 to Habitat Newark.
"We're extremely grateful to the FedEx Ground volunteers for putting in a hard day's work on the Women Build III House," said Lynne Blaesser, co-chairperson of the Women Build program "and I'd like to thank FedEx Ground for the donation, which will help Habitat Newark in our mission to provide affordable homes for families in Essex County."
Erin Truxal, a FedEx spokesperson said that "FedEx strives to make a positive difference in the communities we serve. Our team members support causes in their hometowns every day."
MetLife Partners with Habitat Newark
MetLife officials announced that the company will be teaming up with Habitat for Humanity Newark to build a home for a hard-working, low-income family in Newark's West Ward.
About 20 employees of the insurance company, including "Snoopy." MetLife's company mascot, have volunteered to attend the MetLife Build Day on July 23rd. The company has also agreed to donate $6,000 to Habitat Newark to supplement the efforts of the volunteers.
The house MetLife will be working on is the Women Build III House which is a part of the Habitat Newark Women Build Program. Most of the MetLife volunteers will be women.
"We're extremely grateful to the MetLife volunteers for agreeing to work on the Women Build house," said Lynne Blaesser, co-chairperson of the Women Build program, "and I'd like to thank MetLife for the donation which will be put to good use."
Habitat Newark's Women Build program helps women learn building skills in an atmosphere where they feel comfortable even if they don't have construction experience. Beginners are welcome to develop abilities that may be useful in their own homes and to join with other women to create affordable housing for hard-working, low income families. Seventy percent of Habitat Newark families consist of single women and their children.

Pearl Jam Fans Raise Funds for Habitat for Humanity Newark at Pre-Show Party in Newark
The Wishlist Foundation, a nonprofit group of dedicated Pearl Jam fans raised
$1,000 for Habitat for Humanity Newark during a fundraiser on May 18th, prior to the
legendary rock band’s concert at Newark’s Prudential Center later that evening.
The event, held at MMM Bellos Pub in Newark, featured live music from members of NO
CODE, a Pearl Jam tribute band based in New Jersey, and happy hour priced drinks.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to The Wishlist Foundation for choosing Habitat Newark as the
beneficiary of this event,” said David Zurheide, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity
Newark. “You’re not only dedicated Pearl Jam fans; you’re dedicated to helping people. This
donation will help us provide homes for hard-working, low-income families here in Essex
County.”
Attendees made donations at the event and received incentive items like Pearl Jam-inspired
T-shirts, posters, wristbands, mouse pads and ticket albums and chances to win fan donated
Pearl Jam memorabilia. There was also a silent auction featuring autographed
items donated by band members. All proceeds from the raffle and auction will go to Habitat
for Humanity Newark.

Newark Volunteers Work In the Heartland
A group of nearly two dozen volunteers from Habitat for Humanity Newark traveled half
way across the country in May to work on houses to replace homes that were destroyed in
the devastating floods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in June 2008.
The flood, considered a 1,000 year event, destroyed substantial parts of the city and left
hundreds homeless. Help has been slow to come and many are still displaced, but
gradually progress is being made.
Instead of rebuilding some of the homes in the same location, a new community in
Robins Iowa, a few miles north of Cedar Rapids, is quickly taking shape and will be the
home of several families who are working with Habitat for Humanity Cedar Valley to
build brand new homes.
The Newark crew, led by Barry and Sheila Wolfensohn and Carol Manning, worked at

from where the work was done. While there they visited the Amana Colonies for dinner
and several of the women went to work at a site in Iowa City for National Women Build
day. The Newark Crew was joined on the job in Cedar Rapids by an enthusiastic group
of AmeriCorps Volunteers, and the local building team.
This group of Newark Volunteers has worked in other areas in past years, including New

the devastating floods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in June 2008.
The flood, considered a 1,000 year event, destroyed substantial parts of the city and left
hundreds homeless. Help has been slow to come and many are still displaced, but
gradually progress is being made.
Instead of rebuilding some of the homes in the same location, a new community in
Robins Iowa, a few miles north of Cedar Rapids, is quickly taking shape and will be the
home of several families who are working with Habitat for Humanity Cedar Valley to
build brand new homes.
The Newark crew, led by Barry and Sheila Wolfensohn and Carol Manning, worked at

New Cheerios Commercial Will Feature Jason Ramsey
Hollywood came to Newark, at least for a day in early May. At the new Habitat building
sites on 12th Avenue it was camera, lights, action and all the trimmings. The single
element of focus was Habitat Newark’s Construction Manager, the usually camera shy,
Jason Ramsey.
In a really amazing turn of events Jason was one of four people in the United States
selected to be featured in upcoming commercials for the popular breakfast food. There
were thousands of applicants and Jason is one of four winners. Each of the individuals
was selected because he or she had an interesting story to tell and exemplifies the kind of
people who would eat Cheerios. They will be selling Cheerios, but Habitat Newark
should get a plug or two at the same time.
The morning was cloudy, but we were told that was just as good as a sunny day because
the technicians would rather control the light themselves. It took a veritable army to
shoot these TV commercials. It took several large trucks, a rolling sound studio, and
more than 50 staff members in the area to make sure every little thing would come out
just perfect. It took make-up artists to make sure Jason looked his best, and a full
wardrobe staff as well.
In the background, Mr. Willie Clark, Bob Howard, Carol Paster and Kathryn Cassidy
worked industriously on a front porch for the new house. It took a lot of lighting devices
and a tremendous amount of equipment to pull it all together. It also took the cooperation
of local Newark Police officers who kept traffic diverted and moving around the
neighborhood.
All in all it was an exciting day for the Habitat Newark team and for neighbors who
enjoyed the fun as well.
