Youth Involvement With HFHN
“People who don’t have homes should be able to have them and live a normal life like everyone else,” Woods said.
Woods aspires to attend Harvard University or the University of Maryland to become a doctor. When he’s not volunteering, he also enjoys playing video games, drawing, swimming and reading.
"Everyone in the world should have a home- a place to come to at the end of the day and relax,” said Friedlander, a Montclair resident. “That's why I wanted to help people get a home."
Friedlander has been raising money from third through sixth grade and was able to raise more than $160 for Habitat Newark. She did so by selling cookies, bookmarks, and decorated plates made by her and her friends at her school. She also organized lemonade stands and did face paintings for younger children.
"When I was in third grade, I did a book report about Jimmy Carter and learned that he worked with Habitat for Humanity,” Friedlander said. “My mom volunteered with Habitat Newark and she drove me by one of the houses.”
Friedlander said there she met Executive Director David Zurheide, who taught her about building houses for families that don’t have them. “He told me that it costs about $90,000 to build a home in Newark and that became my goal,” she said. “I didn't reach that goal, but it was fun trying."
Friedlander hopes to attend college at Northwestern or Stanford University. She eventually wants to become a talk show host and help benefit more non-profit organizations. Friedlander has other big plans for the future, including her Bat Mitzvah project in which she hopes to
raise $25,000 for the Diabetes Foundation, Inc.
“This organization helps get important Diabetes medicine to people who can't afford it,” she said. “After that I would like to spend the rest of my time working to raise more money for Habitat Newark. I look forward to when I'm 16 - then I can actually help build the house."
Thank you, guys! For more information about getting your children involved with Habitat Newark, please give us a call at 973-624-3330.

Pearl Jam Fans Raise Funds for Habitat for Humanity Newark at Pre-Show Party in Newark
$1,000 for Habitat for Humanity Newark during a fundraiser on May 18th, prior to the
legendary rock band’s concert at Newark’s Prudential Center later that evening.
The event, held at MMM Bellos Pub in Newark, featured live music from members of NO
CODE, a Pearl Jam tribute band based in New Jersey, and happy hour priced drinks.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to The Wishlist Foundation for choosing Habitat Newark as the
beneficiary of this event,” said David Zurheide, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity
Newark. “You’re not only dedicated Pearl Jam fans; you’re dedicated to helping people. This
donation will help us provide homes for hard-working, low-income families here in Essex
County.”
Attendees made donations at the event and received incentive items like Pearl Jam-inspired
T-shirts, posters, wristbands, mouse pads and ticket albums and chances to win fan donated
Pearl Jam memorabilia. There was also a silent auction featuring autographed
items donated by band members. All proceeds from the raffle and auction will go to Habitat
for Humanity Newark.

Newark Volunteers Work In the Heartland
way across the country in May to work on houses to replace homes that were destroyed in
the devastating floods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in June 2008.
The flood, considered a 1,000 year event, destroyed substantial parts of the city and left
hundreds homeless. Help has been slow to come and many are still displaced, but
gradually progress is being made.
Instead of rebuilding some of the homes in the same location, a new community in
Robins Iowa, a few miles north of Cedar Rapids, is quickly taking shape and will be the
home of several families who are working with Habitat for Humanity Cedar Valley to
build brand new homes.
The Newark crew, led by Barry and Sheila Wolfensohn and Carol Manning, worked at
the Habitat warehouse and in five working days constructed the walls for two full homes.
The walls will be transported to the new site in Robins where they will be assembled with
foundations, floors, ceilings and roofs. In Robins, where the new community is taking
shape, the Habitat homes will be the first to be constructed in a large housing
development.
The Volunteers stayed in a hotel in Mount Vernon, IA which is about 20 minutes away
from where the work was done. While there they visited the Amana Colonies for dinner
and several of the women went to work at a site in Iowa City for National Women Build
day. The Newark Crew was joined on the job in Cedar Rapids by an enthusiastic group
of AmeriCorps Volunteers, and the local building team.
This group of Newark Volunteers has worked in other areas in past years, including New
Orleans and Biloxi, MS. Future trips will be announced at this Website and be sure you
have signed up for our E-newsletter from the home page.

New Cheerios Commercial Will Feature Jason Ramsey
sites on 12th Avenue it was camera, lights, action and all the trimmings. The single
element of focus was Habitat Newark’s Construction Manager, the usually camera shy,
Jason Ramsey.
In a really amazing turn of events Jason was one of four people in the United States
selected to be featured in upcoming commercials for the popular breakfast food. There
were thousands of applicants and Jason is one of four winners. Each of the individuals
was selected because he or she had an interesting story to tell and exemplifies the kind of
people who would eat Cheerios. They will be selling Cheerios, but Habitat Newark
should get a plug or two at the same time.
The morning was cloudy, but we were told that was just as good as a sunny day because
the technicians would rather control the light themselves. It took a veritable army to
shoot these TV commercials. It took several large trucks, a rolling sound studio, and
more than 50 staff members in the area to make sure every little thing would come out
just perfect. It took make-up artists to make sure Jason looked his best, and a full
wardrobe staff as well.
In the background, Mr. Willie Clark, Bob Howard, Carol Paster and Kathryn Cassidy
worked industriously on a front porch for the new house. It took a lot of lighting devices
and a tremendous amount of equipment to pull it all together. It also took the cooperation
of local Newark Police officers who kept traffic diverted and moving around the
neighborhood.
All in all it was an exciting day for the Habitat Newark team and for neighbors who
enjoyed the fun as well.
Schedules for the commercials have not yet been set, but check back on this Website and
we will keep you posted.

National Women Build Day: Star Ledger Article
Newark mom building Habitat for Humanity house gets help from volunteers for Mother's Day
By Rohan Mascarenhas/The Star-Ledger
May 08, 2010, 6:15PM
Newark, NJ -- Katina Leake has a typical mother’s checklist this year. Buy a dress for her daughter’s prom in June. Send her off to college. Keep her school bus driver job to pay the rent.
But there’s an extra item that stands out: build her own home with Habitat for Humanity on the weekends.
"I questioned if I could do it at first," said Leake, 37, a single mother of three. "But I get my strength from looking at my children’s eyes. When I want to give up, I know I can’t because of them."
Sporting a white hard hat, Leake had some help today when two dozen volunteers — mostly women — showed up in honor of Mother’s Day at her likely future home, a two-story, three-bedroom structure on 12th Avenue.
They came as part of National Women Build Week, a Habitat initiative that aims to highlight the often dire housing situation single mothers face.
"Nearly 80 percent of our homeowners nationwide are single women with children," said Lynne Blaesser, a co-chair with Habitat Newark. "It requires something special because they have to work all week."
Habitat, a nonprofit that has built more than 350,000 houses worldwide, has stiff requirements for potential homeowners, who must have a full-time job and pay back a no-interest loan.
Longtime volunteer Virginia Petrucci, 46, of Jersey City, was among the women today hammering at blocks of wood as rain fell through cracks in the partially built two-story home.
"The group of women here is special," she said. "You get to know them. You start telling stories and you a have a laugh. Women are strong, sometimes stronger than men."
The construction also provided a chance for Maylene Lopez, 20, of Newark to spend time with her mother, Sylvia Loperena, 42, another potential Habitat homeowner.
"I have to help my mom," Lopez said, smiling. "I think these women are special, to come here and help us with their time."

Lowe’s is providing Habitat for Humanity Newark a $5,000 Lowe’s store gift card, as well as in-store volunteer training, in support of this one-day build. Habitat Newark on the Road
In June and early July of 2008, northeastern Iowa was hit by devastating flooding of the rivers feeding into the Mississippi. These floods are often referred to as Iowa's Katrina. Thousands of homes and businesses were lost. Many Iowans were left out of homes and out of work. The national media did not give these floods the same type of coverage they gave Katrina because the population base is smaller, video images less graphic, and no lives were lost-- but the damage was as significant to the local region as Katrina was to the Gulf Coast.
Join Habitat Newark volunteers on this trip. There are still some slots left, but hurry as the group is limited to 20 people.
Trip details:
Depart Newark Liberty Airport on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 (Return on Sunday, May 9th, 2010). Fly to Chicago and then drive to the Cedar Rapids area and stay in a nearby hotel.
Airfare will be $230 per person.
Hotel room (Two volunteers in a room with two beds) including breakfast will be $215 per person.
Each volunteer's share of rental cars will be about $85.
The maximum number of people who can make this trip is 20, and it is first come first served. If you are interested, please contact:
